Fishing Hobby Transformed Into a Business Opportunity

The Thakar and MahadevKoli community people fromVaishnavdham(Tahsil - Junnar) indulge in fishing just as a hobby. Taking a note of this fact, Lupin Foundation - an NGO working for human welfare, encouraged the tribal youths to form a group and turn the hobby of fishing into a business.

During the last few years, Buchkewadi has witnessed an all-encompassing, comprehensive and potent progress on multiple levels. A drought prone rural area has been transformed into a dynamic hamlet through fundamental remodeling of strategies. This has been possible through definitive and unified efforts of the villagers in association with NABARD and Lupin Foundation.

Villagers say..

Earlier we had limited crop choice, once the rabbi and kharip seasons were over; we had to rush to Mumbai to earn our bread and butter. There used to be hardly young men in the village after these seasons. But now 70% land has come under irrigation water, the villagers are back to work in the village.

Previously, very few literate people can be found in the village, many of us were working as porters. Now, days have changed, children are taking education and doing well.

It was difficult to walk at the night before some years, it was complete wasteland everywhere. Now entire waste land is brought under cultivation. Village is having roads and irrigation water so village has become beautiful.

We had to walk miles in search of drinking water, April-May were the toughest seasons. Now those hardship days are gone, we have ample quantity of water in the village.

We tribal women had no option but to go outside the village as laborers, because the village had no employment options. Today we have work in the village and earning for our livelihoods.

Fodder was hard to find in the older days, now farmers are able to grow fodder crops like Bajari, Jawar which have helped in increasing milk production. Even ban on open grazing has helped to get good fodder.
